Delivering Safer Roads for Waroona

  • Senator The Hon Carol Brown - Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Transport
  • Senator Louise Pratt - Senator for Western Australia

Funding under the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program will substantially improve 24 dangerous crash sites on Western Australia roads in 2023–24, including the South Western Highway and Willowdale Road intersection in Wagerup.

This project is included in the $12.6 million of funding for Western Australian roads under the Black Spot Program’s 2023–24 funding round.

“The South Western Highway and Willowdale Road intersection
is notorious amongst the community for causing
serious accidents and fatalities."

The Black Spot Program funds safety measures such as traffic signals and roundabouts at locations where a number of serious crashes are known to have occurred, or are at risk of occurring.

This Black Spot project will make an important contribution towards reducing serious injuries and deaths on Tasmania’s roads, and build on previous investments in the state.

$1.57 million will go toward extending the left turning lane to Willowdale Road and making modifications such as installing a splitter lane and clearing vegetation.

“I am incredibly relieved to hear funding will be delivered
to address this black spot for the people of Wagerup.”

These changes will significantly improve the safety of this intersection and should dramatically reduce the risk of serious accidents for road users in Wagerup.

West Australians have had a devastating twelve months with 161 people dying on our roads.

Josh Wilson MP is the Chair of the Western Australian Black Spot Consultative Panel which provide the opportunity for stakeholders to have a say in the project selection process, and ensure that nominations of the highest priority and importance to the local community are recommended for approval.

The WA review panel includes representatives from the Royal Automobile Club of Western Australia, Western Roads Federation, Road Safety Commission, Western Australian Local Government Association and Main Roads Western Australia.
