Abbott’s Climate Sham: A Risk to Western Australia
Tuesday, 16 August 2011
In the past month of carbon-flamed debate, the good news for Western Australia appears to have gone under the radar.
Independent Treasury modelling shows that the WA economy will continue to grow after a carbon price is introduced, and will outperform other Australian states.
And contrary to Tony Abbott’s dire predictions, the Australian economy as a whole will continue to grow after a price is put on carbon in July next year.
While our economy continues to grow at a rate which is the envy of the rest of the world, we will also be doing something to protect the environment that supports life – all of our lives.
That is what we have at stake. Our unique West Aussie environment, lifestyle, jobs, and farming industries are all threatened by climate change.
I think we can all agree that there is no option worse than doing nothing.
Well, perhaps there’s one.
Tony Abbott’s sham policy of ‘direct action’ is nothing more than a plan to tax each WA family $1,300, which he will then hand over to the big polluters to cut their own emissions.
On top of that, leaked Liberal Party documents say it will cost $27 billion to scrap the carbon tax.
It’s a nonsense policy and it obviously won’t work.
That’s why Tony Abbott has been unable to find a single economist that supports his climate change policy.
When questioned on this, he had the arrogance to imply that Australia’s world-renowned economists were simply not smart enough.
Frankly, I am stunned that Coalition members, who supposedly believe in the free market, would think such a plan has any merit.
It is clearly a risk to the WA economy and environment.
Personally, I am proud to be part of a political party that is taking action to ensure Australia has a prosperous clean energy future.
We know that when West Australians find out the details of Labor’s plan for a clean energy future, they support it.
So, log on now to www.cleanenergyfuture.gov.au to find out the details.
Best wishes
