Rainbow Labor welcomes support of marriage equality by Labor's youth wing
Monday, 26 September 2011
The Australian Rainbow Labor Network has today welcomed the news that the ALP’s youth wing, Australian Young Labor, yesterday passed a resolution supporting marriage equality at their annual conference in Canberra.
Labor Senator, Louise Pratt, has welcomed the move as another step forward In support of marriage equality in the lead up to the party's national conference in December this year.
“It’s an encouraging sign that the future of our party supports extending the same marriage rights to same sex couples as those enjoyed by the rest of the community. These views certainly reflect the majority view of young Australians.
"This motion sends a clear message that now is the time to be on the right side of history and support marriage equality in the Labor Party.
“It’s encouraging sign that in the past week we have seen the passage of the motion in the Tasmanian Parliament and now at the Australian Young Labor Annual Conference, both calling for action on this issue," Senator Pratt said.
Yesterday’s resolution at the Australian Young Labor Conference is the second that has passed a federal Labor Party unit conference. The first federal Labor Party unit conference motion on this issue was passed by the Labor Women’s Network Conference earlier in the year.
