More affordable rental homes in Broome and Derby

Friday, 7 October 2011

Residents in Broome and Derby will have access to more affordable rental accommodation under the Gillard Government's National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS).

Senator for Western Australia, Louise Pratt, today welcomed the announcement of successful applications for NRAS round four in Broome and Derby.

"I know that the cost of rent is a real pressure for families in the Kimberley,” Senator Pratt said.

“That’s why I am very pleased to welcome investment in affordable housing projects by Foundation Housing Ltd and Questus Funds Management Ltd. Together, these projects will see the construction of 230 homes in Broome and 20 in Derby.”

The Gillard Government is addressing housing affordability by increasing the supply of affordable rental properties for Australian families.

NRAS offers financial incentives to the business sector and community organisations to build and rent homes to low and moderate income households.

“Before Labor came to office there were no programs aimed at improving the availability of housing at affordable rental properties,” Senator Pratt said.

The National Rental Affordability Scheme is about increasing the supply of new affordable rental housing, reducing rental costs for low and moderate income households and encouraging investment and innovative affordable housing.
