BER openings highlight the benefits for the Mid West
Friday, 13 May 2011
Senator Louise Pratt officially opened new and improved facilities at five schools throughout the Mid West this week. Funding for the extensive works was provided as part of the Australian Government’s Building the Education Revolution (BER).
Brand new multipurpose halls, libraries and science centres will now be a common feature of Mid West schools, ensuring that all students have access to the best education possible.
Strathalbyn Christian College received $4,126,400, St Mary’s Catholic Primary School received $925,000, St Francis Xavier Primary School received $3,198,081, Nagle Catholic College received $2,167,968 and Northampton District High School received $1,172,300.
The Gillard Government is investing more than $1.8 billion into Western Australian schools, with $870,160,842 going to regional and rural areas.
Senator Pratt said these investments significantly enhanced access to purpose-built, modern education facilities students for students throughout the region.
“The Gillard Government is determined to make sure that students have access to the best learning environment, no matter where they live,” she said.
“That’s why we’re spending more than $870 million to ensure Western Australia’s regional and rural students get a world class education.
“We want students throughout the Mid West to be learning in a modern environment and that’s why we have made these significant investments.” Senator Pratt said.
Senator Pratt congratulated all schools on the efforts they had gone to complete their new facilities and spoke of the benefit to both the school and local community.
“The global financial crisis meant we had to inject money into the local economy quickly to keep it afloat. Schools have played an absolutely vital role in making sure we could get projects up quickly and create jobs at the same time as spending money wisely.
“It has been fantastic to see principals, staff, parents, students and tradespeople working together to deliver these important projects.
“All these local schools have proven they have spent this money wisely and in the best interests of students – but making it happen hasn’t been an easy task. All the schools proved they could get big bang for their buck. I would like to thank and congratulate them all.
“It is tremendous to be here to visit schools in the region to celebrate the opening of these facilities and to witness first hand, the impact this has had on local students.” Senator Pratt said.
The BER is a key element of the Australian Government’s $42 billion Nation Building – Economic Stimulus Plan to support jobs, stimulate local economies and invest in important infrastructure for the long term.
