Families to be hurt by Abbott’s plan to cut to the bone

Senator for Western Australia, Louise Pratt, said families in Western Australia are worried about Tony Abbott’s plans to cut family payments to the bone if he wins government.

Shadow Treasurer, Joe Hockey, has confirmed he will carry out Abbott’s plans to axe the Government’s increased FTB payment for parents with newborns, which is replacing the baby bonus.

This will leave around 113,000 families across Australia worse off.

“I know Tony Abbott’s plans to cut to the bone are worrying a lot of families in Western Australia - and rightly so,” said Senator Pratt.

“While the Gillard Government has made the responsible decisions in the Budget to keep our family payments system strong and sustainable - Tony Abbott’s answer is to slash support,” Senator Pratt said.

At the same time, he’ll make all families pay so that wealthy lawyers and bank executives can receive up to $75,000 when they have a baby with his rolled gold paid parental leave scheme.

If Mr Abbott becomes Prime Minister, families in WA will lose the Schoolkids Bonus, have their superannuation slashed, and people on low incomes, including students and job seekers, will lose the income support bonus.

“We know there is more to come - Tony Abbott and Joe Hockey have said it themselves - everything is on the table” said Senator Pratt.

“Families in Western Australia do have a choice - between a Labor Government that looks out for them, or an Opposition Leader who just wants to cut to the bone,” said Senator Pratt.
